During her pregnancy, Sarah Ruhl became enamored with the collected letters of poets Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell. Her fascination with their correspondence — over 400 letters that span 30 years — inspired the play Dear Elizabeth, a story of platonic soul mates.
