Adam Smith Theatre, Kirkcaldy: There is plenty of inspiration in Alan McHugh's Jack and the Beanstalk, what with designer Alison Irwin's giant steampunk robot, the Victorian Edinburgh setting and McHugh's postmodern take on the principal boy. But, despite courageous application from a hardworking cast, it lacks the cohesion that could give it depth, while the results are far too ragged around the edges…
