Ought I be surprised that the four leading roles of Carrie, Julie, Billy Bigelow and Nettie in the Opera North production of Carousel have performers who sing only four performances per week? I can quite understand that demanding roles in a Wagner opera mean we cannot expect performers to manage eight performances a week. But one expects singers in a musical not to need alternates.
