As a producer of such shows as Beadle's About and TFI Friday, Stephen Joel was a highly popular figure in the television entertainment industry. He began his career in stage management working on a wide range of productions, from variety shows in his childhood home of Torquay, to national tours and finally the West End, where he was stage manager on the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats in the early 1980s.
