An actor of exceptionally wide range, James Grout reached his apotheosis in Inspector Morse (1987-2000), the ITV series centred on investigations carried out by a senior crime investigations officer played by John Thaw. Grout played Morse's boss, Chief Superintendent Strange, whose forename was never revealed.
